Why The Shining Lies?
This is a question we get asked a lot, so we'll try and answer it. Some of you may have read Neil Sheehan's epic biographical tome on the Vietnam War, A Bright Shining Lie - basically, we got it from that. On a broader level, the name suggests the sweeping romance a lie can promise. We address, though sometimes obliquely, big themes in our songs; and one of the biggest themes inherent to humanity is deception, the lies we tell ourselves to make war, love and religion. We lie, and we sometimes want to believe lies, to make sense of the world: something the best and most glorious pop music perhaps should also help us do. We want our music to shine and to be sweet - and stick in your heads - but in addition to beat with a brutal, primal and honest heart. A shining lie is not a white lie, for it is not trivial or harmless; it is rather a dangerous, captivating and deadly promise for which we cannot help but fall.
